Eliot Henry -- 6 weeks, 3 days old

Hello! Natalie took this video yesterday when Eliot was 6 weeks and 3 days old.

He is doing really well. He's kind of starting to smile, and in the last week he's begun to understand the difference between night and day, and that night time is mostly for sleeping. Thank goodness! He still wakes up every 3-4 hours to nurse, but that's alright. I can manage that for awhile. Also, this week I have been successful at getting him to sleep in the bassinette again, at least sometimes. The first few hours of the night he is spending in the bassinette. After the first waking/nursing time at night, I sometimes get him back in the bassinette (next to our bed), but sometimes bring him into bed with us. If he's easy to put back down, I rock for 20 mins or so and then he goes back in the bassinette. If he's more awake and isn't seeming to get into a deep sleep by me rocking him for 20 mins, then I get tired and impatient and just bring him to bed with us, and he falls asleep next to me in the crook of my arm, which is sweet and fun, although I don't like to do it all the time because it limits my mobility and comfort in bed. But he's a good snuggler. We both like sleeping with him.

He's started to poop very infrequently, which I'm told is normal. He used to poop like 2-3 times a day, and now it's like every 2-3 days he poops. Easier to clean up. I'm also getting a little better at burping him, which makes him more comfortable during and after nursing.

In other news, my work, The Nature Conservancy in Oregon, has made a bunch of layoffs. I haven't been laid off, but I have to go part time when I return from maternity leave. I think it will work out really well though. I'll be half time, and I get to keep my benefits. In December, they hope to take me back full time. I guess if things get worse though, I could be laid off in December. We'll see. But in any case, I get to spend more time with Eliot in his first year. I'm hoping to find another mom who works half time and trade off child care -- I can watch her and my baby half the week, and she can watch both the other half of the week. I imagine it will be a lot of work, and it might not work out so well as I can't imagine watching another baby while I'm nursing Eliot. But, I'd like to talk to other moms and see if I can find someone who is interested in trying.

He's so precious!! I'm glad that you haven't been laid off. And it is nice that you will have more time with Eliot! Glad that everything is going so well for all of you.

Love, Jen
